In Language Arts grade 7, students will become confident and competent users of all six Language Arts which are Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Viewing and Representing. Students will learn to comprehend and respond to a variety of texts, including Fiction (short stories or novels), Non-Fiction (articles, speeches, webpages, etc.), Visual Texts (cartoons, photographs, films, etc.) and Poetry. Students will also practice creating different writing forms, including Paragraphs, Essays, Narratives, Letters, Visual Representations, etc. To develop students’ writing, lessons and activities will be aimed at the different writing traits, including Ideas and Details, Organization, Voice, Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, and Conventions. Finally, students will be encouraged to select and read books that are personally interesting to them. Our library has a vast and current selection of novels. Remember, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” (Richard Steele)

MATH

The main goals of the grade 7 Mathematics program are to prepare students to use mathematics confidently to solve problems, communicate and reason mathematically, appreciate and value mathematics, commit themselves to lifelong learning, and become mathematically literate adults that use mathematics
to contribute to society. The four main areas of study are: Numbers, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Grade 7 Social Studies curriculum focuses on Canada and it’s people. Throughout the year we will be exploring pre-confederation and post-confederation history along with an emphasis on Aboriginal, Francophone, and British perspectives. Activities to promote higher order and critical thinking skills, and several hands-on projects will be used to enhance the classroom environment and bring Social Studies to life.
SCIENCE
In Grade 7 Science, students develop knowledge, skills and attitudes pertaining to five major units – Interactions and Ecosystems, Plants for Food and Fibre, Heat and Temperature, Structures and Forces, and
Planet Earth. In the Ecosystems Unit, students develop an awareness of ecosystem components and interactions, and investigate human impacts on the environment. During the unit on Plants, students study the
characteristics, needs and uses of plants. In learning about Heat, students explore the sources and uses of heat energy, and consider the impact of resource usage on our long-term ability to meet energy needs. When
learning about Structures, students investigate properties of materials and construction methods, and then build and test structures under different loads and forces. Lastly, in the Planet Earth unit, students gain knowledge
about the nature and distribution of geological structures and processes, such as types of rocks and fossils, mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate tectonics.
