| CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE(Mandarin Beginner) |
The Beginner Mandarin course is designed for students with very little or
no previous Mandarin instruction. The course content includes learning
and mastering a phonetic system (Pinyin) to help build oral skills first. For
grade seven, the topics include sound system, family, school and classroom,
and body parts. For grade eight, the topics include Greetings, Numbers,
School, Family and Friends, Animals, Countries and Languages, Sports,
and Foods. For grade nine, the topics include Times and Dates, Daily
Routines, Home, Directions, Clothing, Color, Shopping, and Fruit. Culture
introduction, appreciation, and crafts are also part of the curriculum. |
| CHINESE (Mandarin) LANGUAGE ARTS |
The Bilingual Mandarin course is designed for students who have
successfully completed the Mandarin Bilingual Program in elementary,
or who have fluency in both speaking and writing Mandarin. The course
content includes a broad scope of themes and activities in order to further
enhance students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities through
instruction in Mandarin. The themes that are discussed in these three
years are: Conflict, Decisions, Life in the Past, Human Nature, Human
Relations, Interest in the Unknown, Choices, Learning Something New
and Imagination. Students who have family members or relatives able
to speak Mandarin (or any Chinese dialect) are strongly encouraged to
practice that language as frequently as possible. The purpose of learning
a language is to be able to function in that language, not simply to have
knowledge of it.
* ALL Londonderry students are encouraged to participate in our
various Chinese cultural activities or clubs, including Chinese Chess,
Chinese Yo-Yo, and Chinese Dance. |
| FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE |
| The French as a Second Language program aims to develop skills in four
components: communication, language, culture, and language learning
strategies. In terms of communication, students work to improve their
listening comprehension, reading comprehension, oral production and
written production. Students will explore the themes of School, People
Around Me, and Weather as they are engaged in various communication
activities. The linguistic elements of the French language are also studied,
including sounds, written symbols, vocabulary, word order, and grammar.
By studying French culture, students develop intercultural skills and
knowledge. Overall, the ability to understand, speak, read, and write French
allows students to communicate with French-speaking people around the
world, to understand and appreciate the history and evolution of their
cultures, to benefit from travel and to develop a competitive advantage in
the work force. |
| INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (Band) |
The ability to make music is a precious skill. Learn it and share it with others by playing music with
your friends in a band! Entrance into grade 7 band does not require any previous musical training. You
just need a willingness to learn, have an appreciation for music, and do your best. Band students gain
the skill of playing an instrument within a school year, progressing from simple songs to faster, more
demanding ones. They are frequently called on to participate in many out-of-school trips throughout the
year. The grade 8 and 9 students traditionally do a week long out-of-province tour.
Instruments include the following:
flute, alto, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, tuba, percussion,
clarinet, tenor, saxophone, trombone, baritone, electric drums

| GENERAL MUSIC (Guitar) |
Previous experience is not a pre-requisite. Students will have fun Learning Chords, Finger-Picking
Techniques, Simple Melodies, and Basic Music Reading. Acoustic guitars will be available to rent;
however, students may bring their own. |
| ART |
The Junior High Art program is a sequential course which focuses on three major components of visual
learning: Drawings, Compositions, and Encounters. Students will be given opportunities to explore
a variety of media and techniques including Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Print-Making and Clay.
Student artwork may be submitted for various art competitions throughout the year. |
| DRAMA |
| The Junior High Drama program is designed to give students opportunities to gain knowledge of self
and others through participation in drama experiences. Students will explore the basic disciplines of
Movement, Speech and Improvisation/Acting. They may perform short ensemble creations for small
groups within their class, but the emphasis will be on exploration and skill development rather than on
performance. |
| DANCE |
The Dance program at Londonderry is a beginner level course and is open to students with no
previous dance training or some studio experience. Students will be given opportunities to gain
knowledge of various dance forms including the development of technical skills and an understanding
of dance history. The core dance forms explored will be Hip Hop, Jazz and Modern/Creative dance
with opportunities to include African dance, Chinese Ribbon Dance and other Folk dances. Nutrition
and care of the dancer’s body are important components. Students will also have opportunities to create
simple choreographic experiences with partners and in small groups for performance within the class. |
| CONSTRUCTION |
| In this course students will learn how to use hand and power tools in a
safe manner to transform common building materials into useful products.
Projects may include, but are not limited to: Puzzles, Scrollsaw Characters,
Rockets, Birdhouses, Clocks, and Marble Machines. |
| FOOD STUDIES |
| Students will learn to identify kitchen tools and their proper use,
kitchen safety, food safety, and making wise food choices through their
understanding of nutrition. They will develop an understanding of basic
food preparation and cooking techniques while making a variety of snacks
and meals. |
| CLOTHING TEXTILES FASHION |
Students learn how to safely use and care for sewing machines and pressing
equipment and apply these skills in project assembly. They will learn how
to determine pattern size, choose a suitable pattern and fabric, make pattern
alterations and assemble a home accessory or personal garment. |
| VISUAL COMMUNICATION |
Students will be introduced to various applications to create visual presentations,
still images and animation. They will use Photoshop and Fireworks
to manipulate and design graphics and images. Powerpoint, Stickfigure
Animator and Cinema 4D will be used to create animation. The students
will also use Frontpage to create a digital portfolio. The students will use
digital cameras and use their own images in their projects. |
| ENVIRONMENTAL OUTDOOR EDUCATION |
Students will investigate the consequences of human actions on the environment. They will learn
outdoor skills such as Hypothermia Prevention, Clothing Selection, Fire Building and Basic Survival
Skills. The Outdoor Education Program offers at each grade, an introductory course and an advanced
course. Both offer fieldtrips and activities, however, the advanced program (full year) offers
information and experiences in more depth as well as overnight camping and hiking trips. Grade
eights and nines (advanced), will have an opportunity to obtain certification in fishing education and
hunting education, respectively. These are provincial certifications.
ALL students in the outdoor education program will have the following activity opportunities: Indoor
Climbing, Orienteering, Scuba Diving (8,9), Outdoor Cooking, Museum Trip (8), and Rope Work. |
